Short film — drama

Unspoken

Lily deletes the message. Then deletes the next one. A film about everything left unsaid after an argument.

Written by Sara Dhandore

FADE IN:

EXT. PARK BENCH - LATE AFTERNOON

Warm golden light filters through the trees. LILY (17) and JAMES (18) sit apart on a bench, a charged silence between them. A crumpled coffee cup sits forgotten on the ground.

JAMES

(quietly, not looking at her)

You always do this. You shut down the moment things get real.

LILY

(jaw tight)

I shut down? You're the one who never listens.

James stands. Looks at her for a long moment - searching for something.

JAMES

I'm tired, Lily.

He walks away. Lily watches him go. Her mouth opens - and closes.

CUT TO:

INT. LILY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

A lamp casts a dim, amber glow. Lily sits cross-legged on the floor, staring at her phone. The room is quiet except for rain.

She opens her messages. Types slowly:

INSERT - PHONE SCREEN:

"I'm sorry. Can we talk?"

Her thumb hovers over SEND.

Close on her face - hope flickering behind her eyes.

Then - doubt. She exhales. Deletes the message. One letter at a time.

She locks the phone. Sets it face down on the floor.

Silence.

CUT TO:

INT. LILY'S BEDROOM - SERIES OF SHOTS

Time passing. Wordlessly.

- Rotating on the chair

- Lily scrolls past James's contact. Pauses. Keeps scrolling.

- She picks up the phone to call. Puts it down.

- She drafts another message. Deletes it.

- She stares at the ceiling. The lamp flickers.

SMASH CUT TO BLACK.

TITLE CARD: "Weeks passed."

INT. COFFEE SHOP - DAY

Lily sits with a friend, MAYA (25). Coffee steams between them. Lily is distracted - eyes drifting to the door.

MAYA

Have you talked to him?

Lily wraps both hands around her cup.

LILY

(a beat too long)

No.

MAYA

Lily-

LILY

It's fine. It was just an argument.

Maya studies her. Lily forces a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes.

CUT TO:

INT. LILY'S APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT (YEARS LATER)

The room is older. Quieter. Lily (20) sits by a wide window. Rain streaks the glass. The city glows softly below.

She holds her phone, but she's not looking at it. She's looking at nothing.

On screen - we glimpse James's contact. No recent messages. The thread ended years ago.

She sets the phone down.

LILY (V.O.)

I used to think silence was safe. That if I didn't say the wrong thing, I wouldn't lose anything.

She turns back to the window.

LILY (V.O.)

But silence isn't nothing. It's a choice. And choices have weight.

A beat. Rain falls harder.

LILY (V.O.)

I didn't lose James in the argument. I lost him in everything I didn't say after.

Close on her face. Not crying - just carrying it.

LILY (V.O.)

Communication isn't just words. It's the courage to be seen. To risk being wrong, being hurt - being real.

She closes her eyes.

LILY (V.O.)

And sometimes... the hardest thing to say is the very thing that would set you free.

She opens her eyes. Looks at the rain.

Slowly - she picks up the phone.

She opens a new message.

She types.

We don't see what she writes.

She pauses.

She hits SEND.

A long breath. Her shoulders drop - lighter.

FADE TO BLACK.

TITLE CARD: "Say the thing."

FADE OUT.

THE END.
